Customer Financing Solutions: A Guide for Growing Businesses

james kBy james kJuly 31, 2026

    What Customer Financing Solutions Are

Customer financing solutions let businesses offer their customers a way to pay for a purchase over time, rather than requiring the full amount upfront. These programs are common in industries with higher-ticket purchases — furniture, home improvement, electronics, medical and dental services — where the ability to spread out payments can be the difference between a completed sale and a lost one.

    Common Types of Financing Programs

Point-of-sale financing, offered through third-party lenders integrated directly into checkout, is one of the most common models, allowing customers to apply for approval in minutes. Buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) services have also grown rapidly, typically splitting a purchase into several smaller, often interest-free installments. In-house financing, where the business itself extends credit, is another option, though it requires more capital and risk management on the business’s part.

    Why Businesses Offer Financing

Offering financing generally increases average order value and conversion rates, since customers who might hesitate at a large lump-sum price are often willing to commit when the cost is broken into manageable monthly payments. It can also differentiate a business from competitors that only accept full upfront payment.

    Choosing a Financing Partner

When evaluating a customer financing provider, businesses should look at approval rates for their typical customer base, how quickly funds are transferred to the business after a sale, the fees charged to the merchant, and how seamlessly the financing option integrates into existing checkout or point-of-sale systems.

    Risks and Considerations

Financing programs come with merchant fees that reduce overall margin on each sale, and businesses need to be transparent with customers about terms to avoid damaging trust if fees or interest rates aren’t clearly disclosed. It’s also worth considering how financing options are marketed, since overly aggressive promotion of credit-based purchasing can encourage customers into debt they may struggle to repay.

    Final Thoughts

Customer financing solutions can be a genuinely effective tool for increasing sales, particularly for higher-priced products and services, but businesses should choose financing partners carefully and be transparent with customers about the full cost of financed purchases to maintain long-term trust.
