Irish Business Systems: Company History and What It Became

james kBy james kJuly 31, 2026

    What Was Irish Business Systems?

Irish Business Systems (IBS) was founded in 1972 and grew into one of Ireland’s leading independent suppliers of digital imaging and printing solutions, headquartered in Cork with offices across Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Galway, Portlaoise, Derry, and Limerick. The company built a reputation delivering enterprise-level print, document management, and office automation services to public and private sector organizations across the island of Ireland.

    The Xerox Acquisition

In January 2010, global document management leader Xerox acquired Irish Business Systems for approximately €21 million (US$31 million), as part of Xerox’s broader European channel expansion strategy. At the time of acquisition, IBS reached more than 11,000 customers across Ireland through its eight regional offices.

    What Happened After the Acquisition

IBS retained its name and continued operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Xerox, with founder Jerry Carey remaining as Group Managing Director, reporting to Xerox Europe’s senior leadership. The company transitioned to selling Xerox’s full product range, including its Phaser, WorkCentre, and ColorQube printer and multifunction device lines, while continuing to serve its existing customer base.

    IBS Today

Irish Business Systems today exists primarily as part of Xerox’s Irish operations, continuing under a globally recognized parent brand while retaining its original name for continuity with existing clients. Separately, businesses using the ‘Irish Business Systems’ name have also emerged in other segments, such as EPOS (electronic point of sale) technology for retail and hospitality, reflecting the continued relevance of the brand name in the Irish business technology space.

    Why the Story Matters

The IBS acquisition is a notable case study in how a locally founded, independently built technology company can scale through decades of steady growth before being absorbed into a global brand — a common trajectory for successful regional tech and services businesses across Europe.

    Final Thoughts

Irish Business Systems’ nearly four-decade run as an independent company, followed by its acquisition by Xerox, reflects a broader pattern in the office technology sector, where regional players with strong local relationships often become valuable acquisition targets for larger global firms looking to expand their reach.
