Energy, Telecom and Steel: Reading India’s Growth Story

james kBy james kOctober 10, 2026

India’s economic expansion touches almost every sector, but a few industries reveal the story more clearly than others. Investors who study the Reliance Share Price movement over the years see how a legacy energy business transformed into a digital and retail powerhouse. Those who observe the Tata Steel Share Price learn how the demand for metals mirrors the nation’s appetite for roads, buildings, and factories. Looking at these two industries together offers a surprisingly complete picture of where the economy is heading.

    Energy as the Backbone

Growing demand for energy with growth in income levels and industrialisation, makes energy sensitive to crude prices. Given that India imports a large proportion of its crude needs, refining margins, pricing policy and the transition to renewables impact corporate profits.

Big energy companies have seen the writing on the wall and are hedging their bets by investing in solar panel manufacturing, green hydrogen and battery storage to stay relevant in a world that is rapidly transitioning towards clean energy. Closely watch out for capital raised, scale of operations and returns on such investments.

    Telecom and Digital Services

Easy data plans and affordable smartphones have enabled penetration of hundreds of millions of Indian netizens into the digital world, creating massive opportunities in streaming, payments, e-commerce and cloud services. Telecom operators form the backbone of this digital revolution and reap rich rewards in the form of recurring revenue from customers in addition to capturing value from the digital ecosystem

ARPU is a critical indicator for growth in revenues. With limited tariff hikes and better customer mix, profits are poised to grow substantially even as revenue growth accelerates. The ongoing network upgrade cycle will also act as a growth catalyst by enabling enterprise services and facilitating new digital services at the network layer.

    Steel and the Infrastructure Push

Steel is considered as the bellwether of industrial activity. With the government’s push for infrastructure development from highways and waterways to airports and metro rails, steel demand is set to grow. Similarly, the emphasis on housing for all will also contribute to demand for steel. However, while India’s per capita steel consumption is low compared to developed countries, there are headwinds in the form of commodity prices which impact the bottom line.

Companies with captive mines, optimised production processes and a wide product mix that also includes value-added products such as coated sheets and automotive grades have an edge over peers.

    Convergence of Themes

While the themes of infrastructure, digital and energy may seem disparate, they converge in many ways. Increasing infrastructure will result is higher electricity consumption, resulting in the need for more power, which may be in the form of renewables or conventional sources. Growing consumption of electricity means more need for steel. Growing incomes lead to higher consumption and hence higher retail sales and telecom penetration.

Policies around Make in India, production-linked incentives and ease of doing business have a direct impact on all three sectors.

    Risks and Rewards

While the growth trajectory of the mentioned sectors is appealing, it is important to remember that commodity prices and currency fluctuations, regulatory and policy risks and execution risk can have an adverse impact on profits. The significant capex required in these sectors is also a concern on account of interest payments.

While growth in revenues and profits is important, it is also vital to track balance sheet metrics to understand the ability of companies to service debt and continue to grow. The Indian growth story is never a straight line, but the underlying fundamentals are healthy. Such themes offer a good opportunity for investors to take measured long-term positions with a view towards wealth creation. A close study of the sectors along with due diligence on company fundamentals is required before investing. This article is for educational purposes only.
